We had an enthusiastic group of Vets, spouses and children ready for some archery instruction with the best instructors and facility in Colorado. Tom Clum and his staff took us thru all the steps of traditional archery. The group was fitted with a recurve or longbow, with basic form and technique explained. Everyone stepped up to the line with their instructors arrows flying and smiles followed. There is no sign of slowing down, everybody is having a great time learning, shooting, and improving. As the food arrived for lunch, it looked like we would have to pry the bows out of the participants hands. It’s been a great day and it looks like many have found a new sport. A big thanks to RMS Gear and staff. Happy New Year! Bob Adwar SCI, VP/Humanitarian Chairman River Deep, President Click on the pdf below to read the outing report ![]()

Last weekend River Deep and SCI HOP, along with Allen Strong and Rudy Haynes, hosted Veterans from Operation TBI Freedom and Soldiers from Ft Carson Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB), on the Eastern Plains of Colorado, in farm country. Friday morning, the group of Veterans and hunting dogs were excited to walk the tall grass. Hosts Allen Strong and Rudy Haynes were both very generous with their time and land. The hunt began in the tall grass adjacent to the corn fields. Both the flushers and pointers went to work doing their job locating pheasants. The dogs mainly found hens, but a few roosters come out and ended up in vests. Everyone had a great time, especially at dinner with the feast at Happy Jacks Barbeque in Holyoke. Happy Jacks owner, Allyn Robinson, did a fantastic job and has been treating us for years. The group was tired and full, so we headed back to the hotel for a good nights sleep as we were up early on Saturday, back out in the fields. It’s been a great couple of days and a wonderful time for everyone. A big thanks to all of our Holyoke Friends. Operation TBI Freedom, River Deep and SCI HOP hosted the third annual Family Holiday Party for wounded vets and family members at the Bass Pro Shop in Colorado Springs. The Bass Pro Shop and Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl & Grill have a beautiful bowling alley that feels like an aquarium with all the fish mounts hanging from the ceiling along with the tackle and boats. Santa sat next to the Christmas tree, fireplace and decorations as he passed out presents to 50 children, along with over 100 adults in attendance. Some are bowling and some are bringing their kids over to meet Santa, receive a gift and have their picture taken. Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl & Grill, connected to the bowling alley, served lunch at noon which left everyone with a smile on their face. It was a fantastic family holiday party. Thanks to Operation TBI Freedom and their staff, along with Bass Pro Shop, Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl & Grill, Fort Carson Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB), River Deep, SCI HOP and all the volunteers that made this possible. Hosted by: SCI HOP and River Deep Location: Valhalla Hunt Club, Bennett, CO Participants: Craig Hospital Patients Trap Shooting, Pheasant Hunt, Lunch Its hard to believe it’s December. The temperature is in the 60’s. The sun is out and the breeze is slight. We have a big group of patients from Craig Hospital along with staff members. Some have prior experience with trap shooting and pheasant hunting and for some it will be the first time. Either way, everyone is in good spirits and ready to go. We start with the trap range. Instruction for some and tune up for the others. Next comes a great BBQ lunch prepared by Steph and Glenna with Valhalla Hunt Club. It’s time to head up to the tall grass and find some pheasants. The dogs are ready to go along with everyone else. We walk through the fields. Birds fly some end up in the bag and some fly away to another zip code. Either way it’s a great day and everyone is having a wonderful time. A big thanks to all the volunteers along with River Deep and Valhalla Hunt Club. Hosted by: SCI HOP and River Deep Location: El Capitan Ranch, New Mexico Participants: We took four Veterans down this trip two referred by OTF, One from the WTU, 1 from River Deep. Two of the Vets have attended other events that River Deep sponsors. This was the first River Deep event for two of the Vets. Another successful hunt for all that attended. This was the first big game hunt for one veteran, and it was great to see everyone chip in and help with the entire process of harvesting the elks. Our host Tony and his crew lined up volunteer cooks who own and operate an old fashioned chuck wagon truck that was used for all our meals. The volunteer cooks were amazing and the chuck wagon food experience was phenomenal—it was something new for all of us. Once again, the El Capitan Ranch and their staff were incredibly gracious hosts. This is a great place to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and just relax. These events bring disabled veterans together and reinforce the camaraderie that so many vets miss after leaving the military. It is an amazing thing to witness vets that have never met before come together and help each other accomplish tasks and overcome obstacles. It is truly a Brotherhood. It doesn’t matter what branch, MOS, or rank, we all just come together to help one another. Chuck Williamson, SCI HOP/River Deep Vet-to-Vet Mentor |
