Family fishing and archery at Colorado Youth Outdoors The sun is shining, the ponds have fish, and the archery course looks like fun. Both children and adults will be enjoying all that CYO has to offer. We have people on the ponds, at the 3-D archery range and some are just enjoying the scenery and the weather. On this outing we were joined by a group from the Colorado School of Mines who were there to learn and advance adaptive equipment that will help with fishing, archery, and shooting sports. Everyone is having a great time catching fish, hiking and slinging arrows. It's getting close to lunch time and the participants are gathering at the outdoor pavilion which overlooks one of the ponds. We were treated to lasagna, salad and cake pops from our friends at the Ranch West 40 restaurant in Lakewood. After lunch, it's back to the ponds and archery. It's been a great day and a huge thanks to CYO, all the volunteers, Craig hospital staff, Colorado School of Mines, Ranch West 40, and organizations that participated. Anglers of Honor at Lincoln Hills It's fall in the Rockies and the weather is perfect. We have an enthusiastic group of Vets and Craig hospital patients. We gathered on the deck of the eco-center for some pastries and juice. Next, we broke out into small groups with the guides to review the basics of fly fishing. Now it's time to put the waders on and head to the river. The guides pair up with the Vets and head for the water. The rest of us waited for the Craig hospital bus to arrive. Once the Craig patients were ready, we headed to the dock that surrounds the pond. A couple of the Craig patients got into the Trac chairs and went to the river and on a scenic tour of the grounds. Everyone is fishing, smiling and having a great time. Some trout will end up in a net and will be released to swim away. After a morning of fishing, it's time to head up to the deck for lunch and conversation. Ranch West 40 restaurant in Lakewood provided our lunch and always has fantastic meals waiting for the group. It only takes a minute to glance at everyone's face to see that it's been a wonderful day. A big thanks to all the Anglers of Honor guides, volunteers, Craig hospital staff and Ranch West 40 who made today possible. Arriving at Camp Bullwheel one can’t help but notice the picturesque valley surrounded by mountains. We are all ready for some time floating and fishing down the Madison River. Between the fishing, the views of the snow capped mountains, and the brisk water of the Madison River one can’t help but get lost in the scenery. We all took time to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As one veteran said, this is a place to not only come and fish, but to relax, quiet your mind and fill your soul with the beauty of nature. Day 1: The weather didn’t want to cooperate, so we explored the town of Ennis Montana. We hit the jackpot with the Ennis hot springs. Days 2-4: We got in the river and launched our boats, three in all. Floating down the river was breathtaking as we watched bald eagles and ospreys do a little fishing for themselves. Catching fish was what we were there to do, and we were not disappointed. Everyone caught multiple fish. Day after day our fishing skills improved as we landed more and more fish - Brown Trout, Rainbows and Whitefish. We learned from our guides what to look for to find the fish, where we should cast, and they helped improve our casting skills. A huge thank you to our host Peter Pauwels and his crew at camp Bullwheel for the opportunity to spend time in such a beautiful place, the fly fishing instruction, and most importantly, the support they showed all of us veterans. We all left feeling confident in our abilities, to be able to take our rods and hit the waters of Colorado. This past weekend SCI-HOP conducted a Veterans appreciation dove hunt at Nebrado Ranch, in Holyoke, Colorado for the opening day of dove season. Five Veterans and one of their families attended the event hosted by Allen Strong and Nebrado Ranch. Saturday started with a safety briefing, followed by everyone knocking off the dust off their shotguns on the clay range and proceeding into the dove hunt. By the end of the day, the total was above 20 birds. Saturday night was spent at Mr. Strong's house where his family and friends pitched in on an amazing dinner incorporating the harvested dove and locally procured Rocky Mountain Oysters. Sunday held more successful hunting. The crew started early with first shots fired minutes after first legal shooting hours. The fields were full of doves and as time passed, the participants found their leads and the doves piled up. Sunday ended late with a total of more than 35 birds. A huge thanks to Allen Strong and his family for hosting this amazing weekend.
