Equine Therapy - June 11, 2019

Location: U.S. Air Force Academy Equestrian Center, Remount Foundation, Colorado Springs, CO.
Hosted By: River Deep Alliance & Denver SCI HOP
Participants: Craig Hospital, Operation TBI Freedom, Ft. Carson WTB

Equine Therapy
Last week, the River Deep Alliance and Denver SCI HOP held the second Equine assisted learning/ Recreational Therapy, and it was so much fun. We had 10 veterans and 2 family members attend. We had the opportunity to learn more about the Equine assisted learning and see how beneficial working with horses can help with our PTSD and TBI's. After spending some time grooming the horses and learning, we saddled up for a nice long trail ride.

Anglers of Honor at Lincoln Hills
The river is running high and fast and the weather forecast predicted rain, so it's going to be a challenging day in the mountains, but no one seems to be worried. Everyone is at Lincoln Hills to fly fish, learn, and have a fun time. We started the morning with the fundamentals of fly fishing, next will be reviewing the gear, waiters and then pairing up with the guides. Some of the group will be fishing on the river and some will fish the ponds. The trout ended up in the nets and are released for another day. Everyone is having a wonderful time learning and fishing. Even a brief rain shower is ignored.

It's time for lunch and we are having some great BBQ brought to us at Lincoln Hills by Jim N' Nick's BBQ. It's been a great day and a big thanks to all the Anglers of Honor Guides and all the volunteers.

Location: Birdcity, Kansas
Hosted By: River Deep Alliance and SCI HOP
Participants:
Ft. Carson WTB

The River Deep Alliance and Denver SCI HOP recently hosted two turkey hunting trips in Bird City, Kansas. With generous efforts and support from the local community, ranchers, and farmers; Veterans from the Warrior Transition Battalion on Fort Carson were able to make the trip and successfully harvest amazing Kansas toms! The weekend started off with a meet and greet with local farmers that allowed military service members to utilize a total of over 35,000 acres of land for hunting.

The first day of hunting started around 4:00 a.m.  A well-placed hay barrel blind yielded a handsome Tom that came in at just around 20 lbs. Sergeant Dennis Hooks, originally from southern Illinois, landed his first ever Tom with the help of local guide Colin Mulligan. Colin knew the terrain like the back of his hand and was able to put two more veterans on a birds throughout the weekend. There were many stories shared as well as new ones made over a gorgeous Kansas country backdrop. We look forward to more opportunities like this in the fall. A big thank you to the Bird City community for hosting a very memorable weekend.

Texas Wild Pig Hunt - June 7-10, 2019

Location: Vernon, Texas
Hosted By: River Deep Alliance and SCI HOP
Participants: Craig Hospital and Operation TBI Freedom

What a weekend we had stalking and hunting wild pigs in Vernon, Texas! We arrived in Vernon Friday evening and couldn’t wait to get out and start stalking the wild pigs. Our first veteran was able to take down a 130 lb. sow, shortly before dark. The weather during the late afternoon and early mornings was ideal for being out in the Texas heat.

Early Saturday morning, after breaking up into two groups, we headed out into the brush to do some more spotting and stalking. Shortly before noon, our second veteran was able to take a 150 lb. boar. That evening wasn’t as fruitful but everyone had a good time sneaking through the brush.

Sunday, our last day, we headed out at the crack of dawn to get jump on the day and hopefully a couple pigs for our remaining veterans. We started out early Sunday morning, and by the evening, the hunt is a bust for our group, but a great time was had by all.

A huge thank you to our host, Amy Duncan, and her to guides Zach and Andrew who helped our veterans all weekend with the hunt.

Last Saturday we had a group of adults and children for our fencing class at the Denver Fencing Center. The instructors gathered everyone together and began with the basic instructions. After that, we suited up, and the fencing matches started. The scoreboard was turned on, which added more incentive for the fencers. It's a workout, but everyone is having a great time.

A big thanks to the staff at the Denver Fencing Center and volunteers.

Over the past weekend, we had a large turnout to shoot some clays and help support River Deep Alliance in continuing our mission of helping wounded Vets and individuals with disabilities. We have groups from Denver SCI, BOAC, Sables and many local businesses and individuals. The weather was perfect. We started with a light breakfast, registration, and a safety talk. Then the group headed down to the sporting clay course. Even though we are keeping score, its all about having a good time with friends and supporitng a great cause.

We wrapped up at noon and went back to the lodge for lunch. We had prizes, a silent auction, and a talk from River Deep, Craig Hospital, Operation TBI Freedom, and. Ft. Carson WTB about why the outings are helpful to the participants. We have had a fun and successful day. A big thanks to all the volunteers, organizations, and individuals who made it a success as well as all the staff at the Kiowa Creek Sporting Club for their support.

Location: Remount Foundation, U.S. Air Force Academy Equestrian Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado
Hosted By: River Deep Alliance and SCI HOP
Participants: Craig Hospital, Operation TBI Freedom and Ft. Carson WTB

The River Deep Alliance just started our new program of equine assisted therapy/ recreational therapy, which provided veterans a chance to learn about equine assisted therapy. Jeanne Springer from Remount Foundation, and her staff started us with a simple herd observation and grooming exercise. We had a brief therapeutic discussion at the end of the exercise before getting ready for the trail ride. The trail ride was an amazing experience for all the participants even for those that had rode before.
