SCI Denver Chapter
Colorado Youth Outdoors
Windsor, Colorado

It’s our first family fishing, archery and barbecue outing of the season. We have Vets from Operation TBI, Freedom Hunters, WyCo and families from Craig and Children’s Hospital, about 125 people with volunteers and staff. We have archery and fly fishing instructors, rafts that can take wheelchairs, Argo’s and prizes at lunch. It is also the annual Denver SCI Chapter members meeting and they are here to see our humanitarian outreach program in action.

It is a beautiful day and people head over to the many ponds, all full of fish; others head to the 3-D archery course. Children and adults are enjoying CYO’s fantastic grounds. Some of the ponds have docks which is great for wheelchairs and certain disabilities. At 12:00 we gather everyone up for a great lunch and introductions to all of the non-profits we are hosting today. Then it is back to the fishing and archery. Everyone has had a wonderful time!

Operation TBI, Freedom Hunters and Denver SCI Chapter Humanitarian Outreach Program

It is our annual Christmas party for Vets and family members at the Bass Pro bowling alley and Uncle Buck’s Restaurant. It feels and looks like an Aspen lodge. Santa is with us handing out gifts to all the children. The staff from Operation TBI is handing out gift cards to all the adults. Everyone is bowling and having a great time.

Then it is time for lunch and Uncle Buck’s Restaurant puts out a great buffet. It has been a great day for all. A big thanks to all the Bass Pro staff who have been fantastic and all their donations that made this a success. Also, Operation TBI, Freedom Hunters and Denver SCI Chapter Humanitarian Outreach, great organizations and great people who help the people that have given so much.

Craig Hospital
Trap Shoot, Lunch and Pheasant Hunt
Valhalla Hunt Club, Bennett, Colorado

It’s a warm fall day in Colorado, and today we have patients from Craig Hospital attending. We start with some instruction on the trap range, the participants will be shooting from the track chairs, which will help them get comfortable for the pheasant hunt after lunch, most of the shooters have had prior experience at the trap and bird hunting. After everyone has had plenty of practice, we head to the clubhouse for lunch. Then it’s time to head up to the grass and milo for the pheasant hunt. The dogs are ready and we use two track chairs to get started along with the guides and volunteers. The dogs point, the birds flush and the shots are on target. There will be pheasants for dinner! Everyone has had a great day.

Lincoln Hills Fly Fishing – Blackhawk, CO

Operation TBI, Freedom Hunters and Craig Hospital
It’s a cool Colorado morning in the mountains. The creek and ponds are crystal clear, and the fish are active. We have a group of Wounded Vets and Craig Hospital patients ready to try their luck at fly fishing. Most are beginners and will receive instruction from the staff of Lincoln Hills; but, first we have coffee and pastries. Then we break into groups for the basic instructions, and after that it is down to the creek and ponds.

We hookup with some big trout, some are landed and some escape. Everyone is smiling and having a great time. After a few hours we head up to the clubhouse deck and are treated to a great lunch and of course the traditional fish stories. A great day thanks to the Lincoln Hills staff.

July 29-30th
SCI Denver Chapter - Humanitarian Outreach Program
Camping, Fishing, Boating and Hot Air Ballooning at Eleven Mile Reservoir
Lake George, Colorado

We have 70 Wounded Vets, family members and volunteers camping at Eleven Mile Reservoir. We have a pontoon boat and fishing boat ready to take everyone on the lake for fish and sight seeing. People trickle in all afternoon, tents get setup, kids are playing and everyone is getting acquainted. The boats came back to the marina at 6:00. We meet at 7:00 for a group meeting about tomorrow’s hot air balloon rides which is sponsored by the Pikes Peak Balloon Society. We have dinner all prepared for everyone, it is a great evening. We have to be at the launch site a few miles away by 6:00 in the morning so everyone is thinking about some sleep.

The next morning everyone packs up and heads for the launch site which is in a giant valley near the lake. The pilots have coffee and pastries for us and are very well organized. Everyone signs in and are assigned pilots and balloons. There are 15 balloons of different sizes, colors and shapes. The balloons start launching around 8:00, it is an incredible sight South Park is a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains; everyone rides, spouses, kids and Vets. The smiles on everyones faces says it all!

After the flights, we all gather back at the launch site for a great lunch prepared by Pikes Peak Ballooning Society and talk about the history of ballooning and a ceremony for the first time passengers. The Pikes Peak Balloon Society members are very generous and caring, they have done a wonderful job of making sure everyone is having a great time.
A big thanks to everyone!
